Recovering from an eating disorder is a difficult journey, which does not stop as soon as you step out of that facility for bulimia treatment in Westport or any other city in the U.S. Even when you’ve undergone treatment, every day you spend outside the facility is a battle against your inner demons.
If that’s not enough, there will be times when you feel that your willpower is at its weakest. This is a time when a relapse can happen, and you go back to having an eating disorder. But you’ve gone through a lot and fought so much that falling back to your destructive behavior is not an option. If you want to prevent a relapse from controlling you, here are some useful tips:
Know what triggers you
When you feel that your willpower is weak today and you feel the urge to go binge eating or purge yourself, try to think of what has triggered it in the first place. Have you been depressed about something that happened to you at work or school? Have you had an argument with your partner?
Knowing what causes you to relapse, or at least make you feel that you will, can help you recognize your triggers right away and perhaps even help you avoid them before it leads to a relapse. If your trigger is arguing with your better half, then you can tell them to go easy on you.
Make sure that you have a support system
Any person who underwent a recovery program did not go through that program alone. Every therapist who counsels people in recovery will always tell their patients that they cannot recover alone. It shouldn’t be a surprise that after you’ve exited your treatment facility, you still need a support system to help you deal with your potential relapses.
You can ask your family to be your support system. But it’s advisable that you find a support system outside your circle of family members and friends. Someone who has gone through the same thing or a professional therapist will be a good candidate for your support system because they’re more qualified to understand what you’re going through when you’re experiencing a relapse.
Eat meals on time
Do not skip meals so that you won’t feel any hunger pangs throughout the day that could result in binge eating and purging. Eat your meals regularly and also eat your snacks. You should have three meals a day and snacks every three hours. Stick to that schedule so that you won’t relapse.
Avoid negative people
Even the most trivial comment on your size or weight by an insensitive friend could lead you to a relapse. Try to avoid interacting with people who aren’t sympathetic to your situation for a while or at least until you’ve got a better handle on yourself.
But other people aren’t the only ones who can make negative comments about you. You yourself could even be the cause of your own relapse if you can’t control saying negative things about yourself. To prevent a relapse, make a list of all your good traits and read them to yourself every time you feel like you’re about to fall off the wagon.
Recovering from an eating disorder is a never-ending journey. There will be times when the road is too rough and you’ll feel that you can’t go on. But as long as you ask help from your support system and remember what your treatment has taught you, you can survive the journey.
